They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the prize. "I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?" The weight of the honor resonates with the trio. "We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us." Heartbreak and Humour The record came out of a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew. The words detail breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming. "I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'." The trio topped a notable new artist survey in 2013, and have subsequently achieved four chart-topping albums. Development of Style That recent resilience required a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before. For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums. "Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes. "'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound." I Quit hones Haim's trademark blend, mixing organic instrumentation with rhythmic beats and memorable pop melodies. Experiences and Shared Laughter The trio's honesty inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic tales. Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight. "When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible." The band concluded a six-month tour, but say they plan to perform live in the future. A Secure Path You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world. They're major draws, with successful albums and an international following. But the sister act will forever be their number one commitment. "We have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
